Analytical capacity to strengthen the competitiveness of Uruguay’s dairy sector

This initiative seeks to develop and validate the analytical technique needed to quantify dioxins and furans—persistent organic pollutants (POPs)—in milk and dairy products. To date, Uruguay does not have this technique or information on the presence of these compounds in foods, making this project a milestone for national science and for the safety of the dairy value chain.

Boosting exports: new uses for pecan nuts

Commercial pecan planting began modestly in the 1960s. Today, 1,000 hectares are planted, involving more than 50 producers, most of them grouped in the Asociación de Productores de Pecán del Uruguay (APPU), which promotes development across the value chain and commercialization in both domestic and international markets.

Bioassays: another way to analyze the environment offered by LATU

A bioassay consists of exposing an organism to a substance or mixture of substances to observe its biological responses. Results are analyzed to determine parameters such as lethality, growth (increase or decrease in biomass), reproduction, among others, enabling the assessment of acute (short‑term) or chronic (long‑term) effects that the substance may cause in the exposed organism.

The importance of measuring what happens in the environment

As Uruguay’s National Metrology Institute (INM), LATU is responsible for the development, maintenance and dissemination of national measurement standards. In chemical measurements, these standards are embodied in Certified Reference Materials (CRMs).
