Towards the decarbonization of the meat value chain

On Wednesday, March 25, at the Assembly Hall of the Office of the Presidency of the Republic, a LATU team presented the results of a consultancy carried out within the framework of the European Union’s Euroclima program. The presentation addressed challenges and opportunities for decarbonizing logistics and transportation within Uruguay’s meat value chain.

The consultancy, entitled “Proposal for National-Level Actions to Develop the Energy Transition in the Logistics and Transportation of the Meat Value Chain,” aimed to define a series of national-level actions to support the energy transition of the meat value chain across its different production and commercial stages, with the goal of advancing the decarbonization of associated logistics, while also raising awareness and aligning the public and private stakeholders involved in the chain.

The consulting team, made up of engineers Stella Cristobal, Sofía Donatti, and Guadalupe Martínez, together with architect Andrés Olivera, carried out the work between October 27, 2025, and March 25, 2026.

The scope of the consultancy included a diagnosis of the current state of meat logistics in Uruguay, as well as an analysis of international trends and market requirements associated with the value chain under study. It also involved identifying best practices and successful decarbonization experiences in other countries, along with their potential applicability at the national level.

Lastly, emissions were quantified for the value chain through the modeling of technological and management improvement scenarios aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, actions and their corresponding implementation metrics were established.

Through this work, the aim is to strengthen shared understanding of the challenges and opportunities related to logistics sustainability, promote a systemic and integrated approach, and contribute to enhancing the sustainable competitiveness of Uruguay’s meat sector.

This action was funded by the Foundation for the Internationalization of Public Administrations (FIAP), with the National Logistics Institute (INALOG), the Ministry of Environment (MA), and the Uruguayan Agency for International Cooperation (AUCI) serving as local coordinating counterparts.
