Signing of the Mercosur–European Union agreement

On Saturday, January 17th, in the city of Asunción, the Mercosur–European Union agreement was signed. This milestone comprises two instruments: the Interim Trade Agreement (ITA) and the EU–Mercosur Partnership Agreement (EMPA). The latter includes, in addition to the trade and investment pillar contained in the ITA, political dialogue, cooperation, and sectoral collaboration.

The agreement improves conditions for access to the European market, which in 2025 was the third‑largest destination for Uruguayan exports, covering value chains with which LATU has strong interaction, such as pulp, wood, grains, and wool.

LATU and Latitud actively support the productive sector in accessing new markets, strengthening the positioning of national products where they already have a presence, and ensuring that goods entering the Uruguayan market compete fairly with those produced domestically.

In this context, we particularly highlight the work of our teams across all areas to ensure quality standards, improve processes, and add value to the products Uruguay exports to the world, while providing confidence to Uruguayan consumers regarding imports—playing a particularly relevant role in this new phase.
