LATU’s open doors day welcomed over 800 students and teachers

As part of Science and Technology Week 2025, LATU once again got full of young people eager to learn about the work of technicians in various areas of the Laboratory and its R&D foundation, Latitud.

On May 21 and 22, LATU hosted a special visit from hundreds of students from upper middle school. The students had the opportunity to explore the institution’s facilities in Montevideo and Fray Bentos, as well as interact with the teams that contribute to various areas of applied science.

Over the years, the Open Doors Day (JPA, for its initials in Spanish) has become a tradition that brings a festive atmosphere to LATU, aiming to connect teenagers with the world of science, spark their scientific vocations, and encourage their interest in technological innovation.

This year’s activities began in Montevideo with a welcome session at LATU’s Innovation Park Auditorium, led by the institution's president, Lucila Arboleya, its general manager, Jorge Silveira, and the head of Espacio Ciencia (LATU's interactive museum of science), Martha Cambre. Meanwhile, at the Fray Bentos Unit, the first group of over 200 students was welcomed by its head, Marianela Torres.

After an introductory talk, the students were organized into small groups to tour the different stations in each department. Through interactive activities, researchers and analysts presented their areas of work and allowed the students to get a close look at some of the equipment used in the laboratories.

As every year, we celebrate Science and Technology Week with the joy of fostering curiosity and the desire of youth to engage in innovative and cutting-edge fields.
