LATU Commemorates World Metrology Day 2025

As Uruguay’s National Metrology Institute, LATU joins its counterpart institutions around the world in commemorating a new edition of World Metrology Day. In our country, LATU provides trust in measurements, enabling us to face diverse challenges in a sustainable way.

The theme of World Metrology Day 2025 is “Measurements for all times, for all people”, chosen to highlight the essential role of measurements in shaping our past, present, and future. This theme holds special relevance in 2025, as the global metrology community marks the 150th anniversary of the Metre Convention.

As a tribute to this milestone, World Metrology Day 2025 will be at the center of events celebrating a century and a half of international collaboration in metrology. From ensuring fair trade and advancing scientific discoveries to addressing global challenges such as climate change and public health, measurements have been a cornerstone of progress and innovation. This year’s theme also emphasizes inclusion, recognizing that reliable and traceable measurements are fundamental to promoting equity and improving quality of life for all people, everywhere.

Around the globe, national metrology laboratories continuously advance measurement science by developing and validating new techniques with the required level of precision. National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) participate in measurement comparisons coordinated by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) or the Regional Metrology Organizations (RMOs) to ensure the reliability of measurement results worldwide.

The International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) develops International Recommendations aimed at aligning and harmonizing requirements globally across many fields. The OIML also operates the OIML Certification System (OIML-CS), which facilitates international acceptance and global trade of regulated measuring instruments.

These international metrology systems provide the assurance and confidence that measurements are accurate, laying a solid foundation for today’s global trade and helping us prepare for tomorrow’s challenges.

World Metrology Day is also an opportunity to recognize and honor the contributions of individuals working year-round in intergovernmental, regional, and national metrology organizations and institutes. A significant milestone was reached in November 2023, when the UNESCO General Conference, at its 42nd session, officially recognized the celebration of World Metrology Day on May 20th each year. By underscoring its vital role in advancing global scientific cooperation, this recognition opens new pathways to promote metrology in line with UNESCO’s mission to build a better world through science and education.
