LATU and CTplas present key advances in the use of recycled plastics in Uruguayan industry

On April 29, at LATU’s Innovation Park, a knowledge-sharing event showcased the results of the project “Quality Requirements for the Incorporation of Post-Consumer Recycled Plastic into the National Industry,” carried out by the Plastics Technology Center (CTplas) and the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay (LATU), with funding from the National Quality Institute (INACAL).

The project was developed in response to the challenge of promoting a circular economy in the plastics sector by creating technical tools that support the safe, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible use of recycled materials. Over the course of a year, the project team collaborated with various stakeholders in the production chain to identify barriers, analyze national and international regulatory frameworks, and develop protocols, technical data sheets, and the foundations for a certification scheme.

Among the main findings were the difficulties companies face in adopting recycled plastic materials, such as inconsistent quality, lack of certifications, high operational costs, and limited availability in sufficient volumes. Despite these challenges, more than 90% of surveyed companies expressed interest in increasing their use of recycled plastics and highlighted the importance of having tools for traceability and standardization.

Based on these findings, the project lays a key foundation for strengthening Uruguay’s quality infrastructure and promoting a more sustainable and innovative industry.
