A guide to develop food loss and waste prevention and reduction plans was launched

The publication was developed by LATU and the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM), in coordination with the Ministry of Environment and the Congress of Intendants, and aligns with the National Strategy on Food Loss and Waste.

On December 16, together with MIEM, LATU presented a practical guide for food manufacturing companies that need to design and implement a plan to prevent and reduce losses and waste.

At the event, LATU’s president, Lucila Arboleya, highlighted the purpose and scope of the material: “The guide aims to foster more efficient, more responsible models.” She also emphasized citizens’ interest: “As consumers, we need clarity about what ‘sustainable’ means; that’s why certifications and guides provide standardization.”

Adrián Míguez, National Director of Industries, noted that the tool arrives at the right moment and reinforces the public–private agenda for productive transformation: “LATU is a strategic partner of the Ministry and the Directorate; we work together every day. One of the cross‑cutting lines in this industrial policy we have been building is triple‑impact projects. So, working on and generating guides that help manufacturers take better measures to reduce food waste is very important.” He added: “It is a document that will be widely used next year and is updatable, because good practices evolve.”

What does the guide offer?

  • A clear framework for companies to design their plan to prevent and reduce food loss and waste.
  • Key concepts and a hierarchy of actions.
  • A step‑by‑step pathway with expected results, tools, and a cross‑cutting example (production of a pasteurized juice) to facilitate application.
  • Regulatory references and supporting materials, plus record templates.

Why is it important for companies?

RUNAEV incorporated a specific chapter establishing that companies must have an auditable plan for the prevention and reduction of food loss and waste. This guide helps to:

  • Comply with RUNAEV requirements in an orderly, demonstrable way for audits.
  • Improve operational efficiency.
  • Reduce the environmental impact associated with production and waste management.
  • Standardize processes and evidence (indicators, targets, records).

The guide is now available on LATU’s website, and printed copies were also distributed at the event.
