LATU hosts the Interamerican Metrology System (IMS) Week (or SIM, for its acronym in Spanish)
The IMS Week was held for the first time in Uruguay from November 14 – 19. The institution’s legal personality was signed during the event
IMS resulted from the agreement reached between the National Metrology Institutes of the 34 member states of the American States Organization (OAS). Promoted by OAS, IMS was created to foster the cooperation in the field of metrology and the development of equivalent measurement systems in the countries, to facilitate the development of trade and the integration of the region.
During the week, there were several activities, such as meetings, workshops and assemblies. One of such activities was the Metrology for Innovation Forum, which took place during the Industry Week, organized by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM), at the Industrials’ Club (Club de los Industriales).
In addition to the IMS activities, the attending Institutes signed the documents awarding legal personality to the institution, which was considered a great achievement.
As the National Metrology Institute, LATU has the role of providing services to the state and society, i.e., assuring that the measurements made in the country are accurate, and hence reliable and comparable both at a national and international level. Chemical Engineer Claudia Santo, the Director of LATU’s Scientific Metrology, is also the Chair of IMS’s Scientific Committee.
