The closing event of the Programa Aguas I and the opening of the Programa Aguas II were held on september 25 at 09:00 h in the Entrepreneur Club (Sala Las Orquídeas) of LATU Technological Park.
The event began with the words of welcome of the President of LATU, Mr. Fernando Fontán who presented Latitud, the foundation of LATU, and introduced the Programa Aguas. Fontán mentioned that "It was very important to work in a network with other institutions that have been working in the Program as universities and research institutes. Through these institutions we have generated the necessary human capital to develop this Program ».
Then Dr. Diana Míguez took the floor and closed the Programa Aguas I. The event continued with the presentation of Dr. Larrisa Gioia, professor of the Faculty of Chemistry (Udelar), Lic. MSc. Gabriella Jorge, professor at the Faculty of Agronomy (Udelar) and Dr. Héctor García, professor of Sanitary Engineering (UNESCO-IHE Delft). Subsequently, Dr. Diana Míguez led to the opening of the Water II Program, followed by the presentations of the Latitud researchers, Lic. MSc. Lucía Boccardi and Ing. MSc Alejandra Szabo.
The LATU and Latitud Programa Aguas, together with a network of institutions and universities at national and international level, was created with the purpose of developing new methodologies to investigate the presence of emerging chemical and microbiological contaminants in selected hydrological basins of Uruguay. In turn, the objective is also to develop analytical, technological and risk management tools to reduce the environmental impact of industries, agriculture and sewage discharges and to improve sustainability, protect aquatic resources and safe drinking water.
The Programa Aguas II will use an integrated approach to research, development and innovation to achieve tangible scientific and technological solutions that contribute efficiently to sustainable development. Synergy is generated to demonstrate methodologies that optimize energy and water, valorize emissions, waste and effluents, under a circular economy model. It also investigates the most modern and original ways to remediate pollution from diffuse and stern sources to restore water courses, control eutrophication and frequency of occurrence of blooms of cyanobacteria and harmful algae. The Programa Aguas II will be composed of 4 research lines called: Smart, Drinking, Restoration and Nexus.
